The CBD industry is booming and farmers have the potential to make a substantial profit over the next few years. By 2020, the industry is expected to reach a size of $20 billion, so the opportunity definitely exists.
If you’re looking to make the switch to hemp farming, one of the steps you’ll have to take is buying CBD seeds. Farmers have two options when it comes to CBD rich hemp seeds. You can purchase regular seeds, or you can buy feminized seeds.
Buying feminized seeds allows you to grow more female plants, which contain higher levels of CBD. These seeds are created in a few different ways, but the main method is reversing. This is the process that we use here at CBD Seed Co. Let us explain how it works.
Feminizing seeds is not a new concept. In fact, farmers have used this method for quite some time. Female plants grow faster than male plants. Growing female plants allows farmers to plant and harvest more efficiently. Depending on the crop and the weather conditions, farmers can grow and harvest the same plant four or five times in one year.
This is one reason that feminized seeds are preferred in the hemp farming world. The other reason is that feminized seeds yield higher volumes of CBD. At CBD Seed Co., our feminized seeds yield about 98% female plants on average. But our regular seeds result in about 50% female and 50% male plants. When growing feminized seed for CBD, hemp farmers can make about $16,000 – $24,000 in profit per acre, whereas with regular seed, profits fall in the range of $3,000 to $6,000 per acre.
There are a few different ways that seed breeders can generate feminized seed. At CBD Seed Co., we use a process called “reversing”.
We take a female plant that has desirable traits, then spray it with a Silver mixture. The Silver mixture prevents the plant from producing ethylene which, in turn, keeps it from flowering. Essentially, the gender is reversed and the plant becomes a male. When the pollen from the reversed plant crosses with another plant, it produces feminized seeds. These feminized seeds yield mostly female plants.
While our feminized seeds cost more, they also allow farmers to harvest hemp more efficiently and keep more of the revenue generated as profit. Net profits for feminized seed are about 71 – 80%, whereas for regular seed net profits are usually only about 30 – 65%.
