We get asked about our breeding and production processes on a fairly regular basis. Farmers want to know that they’re purchasing high quality seed. They’re also curious to know about the techniques and equipment that have made us successful. We’re happy to share this information because we want our customers to succeed as well.
At CBD Seed Co., we carry years of experience in producing high CBD hemp seeds. We’ve been involved in the cannabis industry since 2009, and have been producing hemp since 2015. Through trial and error, as well as our own research and field testing, we’ve learned a lot about seed production. All of this has led us to the process we now have in place, which we have found to be quite successful and we hope you do too!
After ten years of working in the cannabis industry, we’ve come up with a succinct process that we use for all of our seed production. We’ve found that by using this process, we are able to produce hemp seeds that germinate at a rate of 90 to 99%, and produce plants with 9-10% CBD content.*
We use seeds from a hemp strain that we call B-9. We compared thousands of different plants and hunted down ones with the phenotypes we desired. Then we tested them in our fields. After recording our observations and conducting numerous tests, we decided upon the plant that we now call B-9. B-9 has all the traits we desired, which is why we use it for seeds.
We plant our seeds using a Monosem planter. In order to set them up for row cultivating, we use 30″ x 24″ spacing.
We keep the soil nice and moist until the tap root is established and is six inches long. Then, we let the soil dry out a little. This encourages the roots to grow deeper as they search for water.
We do not spray our plants with pesticide. We hand weed all of our fields.
We use a process called reversing to increase the number of female seeds. To do this, we take a female plant with desirable traits and spray it with a Silver mixture. This turns it into a male. When crossed, it produces all female seeds.
During harvesting, we usually go through and windrow all of our crops. Then we go back through with a pick-up header. If weather permits, we use an all crop header.
*Please note, these numbers are rough estimates, and actual numbers will vary. For more information, please read our page on testing.
By taking the steps listed above, we are able to produce high quality, CBD-rich hemp seeds. We offer both feminized and regular seed to our customers, as well as high CBD hemp clones.
