Oregon has quickly become one of the leaders in hemp cultivation in our nation. With a significant increase in hemp cultivation licenses this past year, farmers may be concerned with the existing demand. Many estimate that about 70% of the hemp cultivated in Oregon will actually leave the state and may have a higher number when compared to Colorado since there aren’t as many processing facilities. The nationwide demand for hemp biomass and CBD products offers a lucrative opportunity for Oregon hemp farmers with the proper guidance and experience. With so much local hemp being shipped out of state for processing, there can be issues with transportation that you may encounter.
With the lack of local processing facilities in Oregon, the majority of hemp biomass is being shipped out of state for processing. Unfortunately, there have been cases reported regarding confiscated shipments, shipments being held for extended periods of time for in-state testing, and impounded shipments with legal-qualifying paperwork. Since there is still a lot of misconception around hemp and marijuana, this is an unfortunate risk of being in this industry. Certain states like Idaho have their own state laws that make transporting hemp through their state lines illegal.
We recommend placing dry hemp flower in a plastic bag, attaching a shipping manifest to the outside of the bag that includes lab results, then wrapping that in another sealed container before placing it inside of a shipping box. Place another loose copy of the hemp’s paperwork on top in case the shipping box is opened during transit. Many of out of state customers will also make the drive to Oregon to pick up their hemp shipments due to the reputation this state holds.
