A Closer Look at New Mexico’s Hemp Program
As of early 2020, New Mexico’s hemp program is currently under construction. This information is clearly stated on the state Department of Agriculture’s website. The reason for this is that the state is currently reviewing the new guidelines set into place by the USDA.
However, during the interim, the Department is continuing to issues licenses under the state guidelines established in 2019. As a new hemp farmer, it’s important to be aware of all the regulations and rules you must adhere to when cultivating CBD seed in New Mexico.
Requirements for Growing Hemp Seed & Clones in New Mexico
In order to grow CBD hemp seeds or clones in New Mexico, you must:
- Obtain a license. You will need a Continuous Hemp Commercial Research Production License if you want to grow hemp year-round indoors. If you want to grow hemp outdoors, you must obtain an Annual Hemp Commercial Research Production License.
- Obtain a Nursery Plant License. This is required for anyone who wants to sell live plants.
- Complete a Harvest Notification Document at least 20 days prior to harvest.
- Submit an Additional Growing Area Form, if applicable.
- Not have obtained a felony related to controlled substances within the 10 years.
- Obtain state background records from the Department of Public Safety. These will be used by the Department to conduct a national background check.
- Meet additional requirements as specified by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.
