One of the most challenging parts about starting out as a hemp farmer in Michigan is finding a reliable source from which to buy your CBD seed. Buying hemp seed is different than buying corn or cotton. There are far more variables that have to be considered, such as seed genetics, contaminants, and CBD ratios. That’s why it’s important to take your time to vet suppliers carefully and choose one that you can trust.
But at the end of the day, how do you really know that you’re getting quality hemp seed? In this article, we’ll discuss some of the things that Michigan farmers should look for when it comes to seed selection.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell if hemp seed is high quality just by looking at it. We wish it was that easy. It would save farmers a lot of time and money. But it’s not that simple. Seed must be tried and tested in order to determine it’s quality. Here are some important factors to consider:
Have you looked at the certificate of analysis for the seed buying? What is the expected CBD content? What about THC content? Is the seed free of contaminants and heavy metals? Always read COAs before you buy.
Next, you’ll want to ask about the genetics of the seed you’re purchasing. What has the producer done to ensure that their seed is pest resistant and mold resistant? What can they tell you about germination rates? And what do the hemp plants look like that sprout from these seeds? Hemp stalks need to be strong and sturdy so that they don’t buckle from the wind or dry out too easily.
Finally, you’ll want to ask your supplier if they have references from past customers. These people can actually attest to the quality of the seed and have experience with planting it. They’re the perfect ones to talk to before you make a purchase or head into the upcoming growing season.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development does not maintain a list of hemp seed sources for Michigan farmers. Rather, farmers are encouraged to be vigilant about vetting suppliers by checking certificates of analysis. CBD Seed Co. is happy to provide COAs for all of the seed varieties we produce.
