Are you excited about the prospects of growing hemp seed on your Michigan farm? If not, you should be! The hemp market is projected to reach $26.6 billion by the year 2026. Now is a fantastic time to convert over some of your land for hemp farming and take your operations to the next level.
Not to mention, the process of getting started with growing hemp seed is pretty simple. The 2018 Farm Bill and the Michigan Industrial Hemp Research and Development Act made it easy for farmers to obtain a license to grow hemp legally in the state.
Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to begin growing hemp on your land.
Growing hemp is like growing most other crops, with a few differences. You test your soil, space your seeds appropriately, fertilize when needed, and make sure your plants get adequate water (though not too much). The only difference is the legal stuff. Hemp farmers have to make sure that their plants don’t exceed THC levels and remain free of contaminants. Here’s how to get started with the process:
You don’t want to go through the process of applying for a license, paying fees, and buying seed if you can’t plant it in the first place. Check your soil to make sure that it’s safe for growing a powerful phytoremediator like hemp.
Once you’ve deemed that your soil is safe for hemp farming, you’re ready to begin the process of applying for a license. To do this, all you have to do is submit an application to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. All of the forms you need can be found online. However, you may have to put in some effort to obtain maps of your land as part of the application process.
Once you’ve received your license, you’re finally ready to buy hemp seed. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development does not provide a list of seed suppliers on its website. But don’t worry, you’re not on your own. CBD Seed Co. can help you get the hemp seeds and/or clones you need for your Michigan farming operation.
If you plan on buying our CBD seed, we recommend purchasing a Monosem hemp planter.
Hemp plants like warm weather, so you’ll want to make sure that the threat of frost has passed before you put seeds in the ground. For more information on planting guidelines, check out our resources page.
Before long, your seeds will germinate and sprout into healthy hemp plants. Make sure your plants get adequate nutrients and water over the growing season. You’ll also want to start testing for THC levels as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side.
