Facts About Maine’s Industrial Hemp Program

Maine’s Industrial Hemp Program is a work in progress. The program currently has a solid plan in place for farmers to receive a license to grow hemp. But specific rules and regulations are expected to change as a result of the USDA Interim Final Rule. For now, farmers can safely assume cultivation by following the guidelines listed in the current program. Some of these requirements include but are not limited to:

• In Maine, farmers most obtain a license to grow hemp. Licenses for indoor production and outdoor production are completely separate.
• Hemp farming licenses in Maine expire once each year, during which time farmers must go through the process of renewal
• Under Maine law, farmers are required to plant CBD seed that’s obtained from a certified seed source. A COA is considered sufficient for certification, so long as all the necessary components are listed the document. • If farmers wish to sell hemp seedlings or clones, they must also obtain a nursery license.
• Farmers are subjected to random testing at any time. However, if testing has not occurred prior to harvest, growers must notify the Department.
• Growers are required to submit both a Planting Report and a Post-Harvest Report.
