Commencing the cultivation of a new crop requires a considerable amount of effort. You have to invest in new land, planters, harvesting equipment, fertilizer, seed, etc. There’s no denying that there’s some significant costs involved. However, if the profits exceed the cost of investment, it could very well be a worthwhile endeavor.
When it comes to hemp farming in Austria, one of the main questions that farmers have is, is it worth the investment? And, how much money can I make?
This article will attempt to explain the profitability of growing hemp seed in Austria and the startup costs that farmers should take into consideration.
As a farmer, you’re well accustomed to taking risks. There’s no guarantee in farming. There are simply too many forces beyond your control – the weather, pests, and even changes in the market. Yet, at the same time, you know when to pull back if a situation looks too risky. This ability to make good judgement calls is key to success in agriculture.
When it comes to growing hemp seed, there are pros and cons that must be considered. Among these are the cost of investment and potential profit to be made. Below, we’ve discussed the state of the hemp market in Austria, the startup costs for growing hemp, and average earnings for hemp farmers.
Austria is one of the leading producers of hemp in the European Union. In 2018, the EU hemp market was estimated to be worth approximately $318 million, according to an article by the Brightfield Group. Austria is estimated to have contributed approximately $80 million to that total. So, in other words, the hemp market is growing swiftly in Europe and Austria is helping to lead the way.
There are several expenses in the beginning of starting a hemp farm. Farmers must purchase a hemp planter, fertilizer, and hemp seed. If land is not already owned, it, too, must be purchased. Additionally, farmers must also buy hemp seeds or clones to grow in Austria. At CBD Seed Co., our feminized hemp seed costs about $2,613 per acre. Our regular seed costs about $87 per acre. And our hemp clones cost about $10,890 per acre. However, these prices do fluctuate from one season to the next.
Profits vary depending on whether a farmer is planting feminized seed, regular seed, or hemp clones. While we cannot speak to Austria, we can provide some insight into the earnings of U.S. farmers.
When growing feminized seed in the U.S., gross profits are about $16,000 – $24,000. For regular seed, profits are about $3,000 – $6,000. Farmers growing feminized seed in the U.S. generally retain 71 – 80% of the gross revenue as net profit. For regular seed, farmers keep about 30 – 65% of the gross revenue as net profit.
Again, these figures apply to the U.S. hemp industry, which should be taken into consideration when calculating potential earnings for your Austria farm.
Our advice: talk to other hemp farmers and do some research on the market. Chances are, you’ll probably find that growing hemp seed on your farm in Austria could be a very worthwhile endeavor.
