Even though many farmers may be switching over to hemp due to its high lucrative potential and its relatively low maintenance needs, there are still obstacles that you’ll want to prepare for before you start your season. Hemp is a very durable, resilient plant but can still fall victim to mold concerns. Due to the hot, humid climate here in Hawaii, mold concerns are even more prevalent for farmers. While there are hundreds of thousands of different types of molds, fortunately, you won’t have to keep an eye out for all of them. There are a few common hemp molds to watch for when planting CBD seed.
Common Hemp Molds to Avoid When Growing CBD Seed In Hawaii
- Gray mold: Gray mold can appear in healthy plants but tends to attack damaged plants with open wounds. This type of mold is often characterized by the brown or gray-brown spots it leaves on wet hemp buds. Another sign of gray mold is yellow discoloration on the stems of your plants. This type of mold is detrimental to hemp flower.
- Powdery mildew: If you see something that looks similar to white flour dusted across your plants, you probably have powdery mildew. This type of mold is more common in Hawaii due to the climate, making it important to practice proper spacing for better airflow. Powdery mildew will also result in yellow-to-brown ascomata.
- Sooty mold: Similar in appearance to soot, sooty mold actually feeds on the common insects that hemp plants house. While sooty mold doesn’t directly harm your hemp, it does interfere with sunlight. This disruption in photosynthesis can stunt your plant’s growth, causing damage to overall health.
- White mold: White mold creates dark brown lesions on hemp plant stems. Stems with these lesions are much more susceptible to breaking and can open up mycelial growth.
- Fusarium: This is the number one mold concern for farmers due to its fast take over and the ability to destroy an entire farm. Fusarium attacks your plants from the root system which, unfortunately, won’t cause any noticeable symptoms until it’s too late. There are very little farmers can do once fusarium hits your farm, making insurance an ideal choice for defending against it.
