Colorado’s hemp industry is growing exponentially year over year. More and more players are getting in on the action taking place in the CBD market and established companies are expanding. If you were ever considering growing CBD hemp seed in Colorado, now is a great time to get started and the continual market growth is proof!
Just recently, a company based out of Grand Junction, called EcoGen Biosciences, made the decision to expand their production capabilities by acquiring an additional manufacturing facility. Below, we’ve provided some details regarding the recent transaction in hopes that it will serve as inspiration for other aspiring hemp farmers.
EcoGen operates as an extension of Kadenwood, LLC which is a consumer seed-to-shelf CBD company. The company is based out of Grand Junction and recently expanded after buying an additional production facility in Delta, Colorado.
In November of 2020, the company announced the news of their acquisition in a press release, which was published online. The announcement stated that their recent purchase included a 50,000-square-foot production campus as well as an additional 165 acres of farming land.
From what we can gather, the company plans to use their new land and facility to continue growing CBD seed in Colorado and processing hemp.
One of the key takeaways of this story is that EcoGen has found a way to become vertically integrated. Most farmers who buy hemp seed in Colorado grow the plants, but do not process them. Instead, they sell them to a processing or extraction facility. EcoGen has decided to skip this step by simply processing the hemp themselves.
Processing your own hemp requires more time, effort, and money. But it can pay off because it allows you to sell your hemp at a higher price.
On the downside, farmers who to choose to process their own hemp usually have a larger overhead. They have to invest in additional equipment, storage facilities, and tools, as well as pay for additional labor. But if you have the money to spend, it could be worth it in terms of ROI.
Truly, when it comes down to it, it all depends on your situation. We encourage you to research your options and choose the path that is best for your business.
