CBD Success Stories: Surviving the Storm

If there’s anything that we’ve learned during our ten years in the cannabis industry, it’s that running a successful hemp business requires more than just good farming and agriculture skills. It requires being able to stay on your toes, respond to situations quickly, and keep a level head at all times. Your business depends on it. Failing to do so has dire consequences.

The Challenges of Hemp Farming

In farming, situations beyond your control happen all your time. There’s no other industry more heavily influenced by nature and external forces.

You have to be constantly on the watch for bad weather and have a plan in your back pocket for when circumstances take a turn for the worse. Because they will eventually. No matter what you’re farming, whether it’s hemp plants, soy, corn, or cattle, you’re bound to encounter some tough battles with mother nature from time to time.

Sadly, we were reminded of this last summer. A wild storm tore through our fields and ripped the roof off of our greenhouse. This was a situation in which we had to react quickly and calmly. Not only was our business in jeopardy, but so was our personal safety.

Surviving the Storm

It all started as a normal day. We were conducting the usual rounds at our greenhouse. Our harvesting season was just a few weeks away, and we were expecting a good profit for the year.

We knew that we were due for an afternoon storm, but didn’t think much about it. We’re farmers. A little bad weather doesn’t usually scare us away, unless it’s serious. And at the time, we didn’t think it was.

Then all chaos broke loose. The storm outside grew more turbulent. The wind picked up speed and before long was howling loudly. Before we even realized what was happening, we heard a loud noise like thunder. Then objects started crashing down around us. Everyone bolted out of the greenhouse immediately and ran to the RV parked outside.

As we ran for cover, we realized what had happened. The wind had torn off the roof of our greenhouse. We checked to make sure that no one was injured and luckily, no one had been. But once we saw that everyone was safe, we realized something had to be done. If we didn’t head back for our hemp plants, we would lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So we did what any business owner would do. We went back to save our livelihood. Through several trips, we gathered as many of the plants as we could until the RV was full.

A Successful Season

The storm this summer was a prime example of how unpredictable the farming industry can be, and how it’s important to have a strong team that can think and react quickly. If we had not gone back for our plants, we’re not sure what would have happened. In terms of safety, we’re not saying it was the best idea. But, in terms of business, it ended up preventing what would have surely been a catastrophe and devastating loss.
