Arkansas approved its hemp program last year, resulting in legal hemp crops grown during the 2019 season. The state’s hemp pilot program continues to operate under the 2014 Farm Bill guidelines for this year’s growing season. With 125 hemp growing licenses issued this year across 51 counties, it’s important for farmers to understand their local rules and regulations. The Industrial Hemp Licensing Program is unable to provide any financial assistance to its program participants, that’s why it’s important to do your own research and find the right resources for ensuring your farm succeeds. Here is what you need to know about the Arkansas hemp pilot program:
All individuals and businesses that would like to grow, handle, process, or market hemp have to be licensed to do so just like any other state program. Since Arkansas has not established their own regulatory program, they are still operating under the 2014 Farm Bill. This will likely change once federal hemp regulations are available later this fall. The 2019 growing season was quite profitable for local farmers with an average of $700,000 in gross income. The interesting thing about their state laws is that they actually forbid the sales of dry hemp flower to the public even if it’s produced locally. This may hinder sales and could be a missed opportunity for both the state and the farmers.
