With the first hemp growing season completed last year in Arkansas, hemp farmers are now entering into their second growing season. As with any other crop, it is always important to take a look back at common mistakes made this first year in order to learn and grow from them. There can be common mistakes made especially by novice farmers but by experienced farmers as well. Here are some of the common mistakes hemp farmers can avoid:
Avoid Making These Mistakes When Growing CBD Hemp Seed in Arkansas
- Improper drying and packaging: When it comes to harvesting hemp biomass, it can require drying which is uncommon when compared to other crops. While some processors and buyers may want to purchase your fresh biomass, chances are that you’ll need to dry it. Make sure to create the proper drying environment and utilize dehumidifiers– this can reduce your risk of mold or mildew contamination. If you are packaging wet biomass, make sure you are utilizing the right amount of pressure in order to properly vacuum seal the package so that no mold or mildew can occur.
- Not acquiring proper testing: Testing your crops is required to ensure they only contain the federally legal amount of 0.3% THC. The unfortunate thing about labs is that there may be many readily available but not all of them are accredited or properly trained. Make sure to find a lab (even if it’s not local) that has the right credentials for testing your hemp.
- Purchasing the wrong seed: Some novice hemp farmers may think that they can purchase industrial hemp seed to grow with the intention of CBD production. Always purchase high CBD seed that’s been bred specifically for this purpose.
