If you’re heading into your first season of planting CBD seed in Massachusetts, odds are, you probably have some questions. Hemp plants have been grown and harvested by humans for decades. In fact, in the early days of the U.S., it was once a requirement for farmers in certain areas to grow hemp on their land. But because of the complex legal landscape, this all changed. So while there may have been an abundance of resources on growing hemp in U.S. soil, these are now limited.
Farmers in Massachusetts are currently undergoing a process of trial and error to figure out what works best for the state’s climate and soil conditions. This process can be frustrating at times, but also well worth it in the end. Hemp farming can be highly profitable if you do it right.
Here, we’ve shared some tips for farmers who are heading into their first growing season.
CBD Seed Co. has been operating in the cannabis industry since 2009. During this time, we’ve made our fair share of mistakes (as all growing companies do), but we’ve also learned a lot about cultivating high CBD hemp. Below, we’ve shared some of the best practices that we’ve found to be useful during our time as hemp farmers.
Hemp likes warm weather. Ideal growing conditions are hot temperatures and mild humidity. That’s why we recommend planting seeds in late spring or early summer.
There’s nothing worse than ending up with a field full of dud seed. Vet suppliers carefully before you buy. And choose someone with a good track record and reputation. A reputable supplier is much more likely to provide you with seeds that actually germinate and grow into hemp plants with high CBD ratios.
One of the big mistakes that new hemp farmers make is that they forget to take weeding into consideration when they plant their seeds. In the hemp industry, most of the weeding is done by hand. Seeds need to be spaced far enough apart to allow weeds to be pulled manually, since CBD products must be free of pesticides. We suggest 30” x 24” spacing.
Monosem makes the best hemp planters around. We highly recommend buying one before your first growing season.
If this is your first experience with growing hemp seed in Massachusetts, you’re bound to encounter some bumps along the road. Be patient and don’t get too frustrated. Every year will get better as you learn from your past mistakes.
