A lot of hemp talk is about CBD these days and this makes sense since, the initial research on CBD as a cure for everything from seizures to joint pain looks promising. However, while the jury is still out on the efficacy of CBD–the material science of hemp is well documented and its applications as raw materials for textiles, insulation, and composite plastics are proven. Montana is currently seeing the boon from this type of hemp manufacturing as IND HEMP is building a multi-million dollar decortication factory in Fort Benton.
IND HEMP will be looking at experimenting with natural hemp fibers for use in some car components. This a more eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based fibers. Says Ben Brimlow (the company’s lead agronomist)
“Ford Motor Company, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, BMW all use plant-based fibers. Hemp is one of the strongest fibers and has many more applications than some of these other natural fibers,”
Expected to be ready to open their doors by 2021–IND Hemp plans to be able to process as much as five tons of hemp stalks per hour. This means the existing workforce will more than double from 15 to 45–at least 35 new jobs will be created. Plus, this could very well lead to more growth, more building, more jobs for locals, and revenue for the state/city. Local officials know this is a big for Montana–especially Fort Benton. The mayor, Rick Morris,- “Stuff like this just doesn’t come along for rural Montana. We’ve been searching, searching and searching, and to have this come along and show up . . . is truly a big deal.”
