The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp cultivation legal federally but Vermont has been a leader in hemp farming since the 2014 Farm Bill was passed. The existing regulations placed by the USDA and the stat’es hemp regulatory program posed serious challenges for the state’s hemp farmers. However, Vermont recently released its agricultural update in order to improve both the local hemp and dairy industry. Let’s take a closer look at how these updates impact hemp farmers in the state.
According to Senator Patrick Leahy, Vermont has been a leader in CBD hemp production since the 2014 Farm Bill passed. The obstacle faced by local hemp farmers emerged from the USDA’s new rule implementations that are to be enacted for the 2021 growing season. However, these new rules would be near-impossible for producers to meet, which would significantly impact the state’s hemp industry. This obstacle has now been temporarily resolved with the introduction of a provision that would delay these new federal requirements for another year. This helps ensure that hemp farmers can rely on the existing Vermont regulations and plan accordingly for next year’s season. This also gives local policymakers the opportunity to permanently solve this issue so that hemp farmers have the flexibility they need for better managing their land, crops, and ultimately profits.
